2024 SunCable BAFL Senior Men’s and Women’s Grand Finals Announced

BAFL

The 2024 SunCable Barkly Australian Football League (BAFL) Grand Finals are set, showcasing the culmination of an exciting season.

In the women’s league, Epenarra’s remarkable journey in their inaugural season came to a close as they faced off against the Spitfires. Fuelled by standout performances from Thalia Kelly and Keturah Wood, the Spitfires created numerous scoring opportunities. Rachel Baker, Dayna Dowling, and captain Taneal Croydon each netted two goals, while Jasmine Fitz, Ricquie Binning, and Wood added one goal each.

Though Epenarra’s season has ended, they can be proud of their achievements. Captain Marcia Peterson, Magdalene Foster, and Deborah Dickenson were instrumental in their success throughout the season.

The Spitfires will now advance to the Grand Final, where they will seek redemption against the Elliott Hawks.

In the men’s league, YDU has clinched their spot in the Grand Final, narrowly defeating Ali Curung in a gripping preliminary final. The game unfolded at Purkiss Reserve, where the Kangaroos held a five-point lead at the first quarter. Asten Ross and Lucas Martin led a strong start for the Kangaroos, but YDU turned the tide with a dominant second quarter, scoring six goals to one. Lyndon Chungaloo, Stanley Waistcoat, and Lemiah Brown were pivotal in this surge.

The Kangaroos mounted a comeback in the third quarter, scoring four goals to three, yet YDU maintained control of the game’s momentum.

In the final quarter, YDU, despite appearing fatigued, managed to score two goals. Ali Curung took advantage, scoring four goals, but they ultimately fell short due to time constraints, allowing YDU to advance to the Grand Final.

For Ali Curung, Ethan Wilson was a standout with three goals, supported by solid performances from Jack Aldridge and the ever-impressive Nicky Poulson. YDU's victory was further bolstered by notable contributions from Clayton Hayes and Telvan Clegg.
