AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) is delighted to announce Michael McLean, formally known in the football world as “Magic” has put pen to paper and will soon join AFLNT as the Football Pathways Manager.

One of the Territory’s most celebrated players, McLean was recruited from the TIO NTFL Nightcliff Tigers Football Club by VFL Club Footscray in 1983 before being picked up in the 1991 Pre-Season Draft as the first overall pick for the Brisbane Bears. He played over 200 VFL/AFL games, scoring 40 goals as a winger and in testament to his ability he is a two-time winner of Brisbane’s Best and Fairest, winning the award in 1991 and 1993.

McLean captained the AFL Indigenous All Stars team in 1995 and in that same year became an assistant coach for Brisbane Lions. He was named in the AFL Indigenous Team of the Century and in 2005 and in 2007 he coached the Indigenous All Stars.

A role model and leader both on and off the field, McLean has coached NTFL clubs Nightcliff, Southern Districts and Tracy Village and in 2009 was named the inaugural coach of the NT Thunder, once again demonstrating his standing in the game.

Head of AFLNT Sam Gibson said McLean will bring his strong leadership influence and expertise to the organisation.

“Michael’s extensive knowledge and experience will be invaluable in ensuring that talented players across the NT have the best chance to fulfil their potential,” Gibson said.

“With COVID impacting this space considerably over the past two years, AFLNT in conjunction with the AFL, is prioritising pathways for Territory Talent across the NT and Michael’s appointment is central to this.

“A key component of Michael’s role will be working closely with the AFL, AFL clubs and local stakeholders in ensuring quality pathways programs are in place across the NT and that the Cazaly’s NT Thunder Academy Program continues to provide opportunities for young talent to be drafted.

“There will also be a focus on engaging with and supporting our alumni already in the AFL system across the country.

McLean said he is thrilled to return to the AFLNT talent space and is eager for the opportunity to work with the Academy team.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to support our youngsters on their respective football journeys to realise their full potential,” he added.

“I look forward to working with the Talent Pathway team as a collective in delivering an elite program and am determined and committed to make a positive difference.”

McLean commences his role with AFLNT at the end of the month.
