2024 SunCable BAFL Senior Men’s and Women’s Round Five Recap

BAFL RD5 Recap

The SunCable Barkly Australian Football League hosted a big weekend of footy with Elliott Oval and Purkiss Reserve playi host.

The women’s division was quiet as unfortunately the Ali Curung and YDU clash was forfeited, and the Elliott and Spitfires game was rescheduled.

In the men’s competition, it was all Elliott in their clash with the Eagles, as BWC just remain undefeated over Epenarra, and Ali Curung stole a win from the hands of YDU.

Elliott could not be stopped against the Eagles as the highest score of the season is recorded.

It may be dry season, but it was raining goals in Elliott with 34 goals kicked alone by the Hawks, with six goals from Kurt Raymond, five from Raven Nelson, four from Lane Jackson, and five other multiple goal scorers.

Despite being undermanned, the Eagles would continue to put up a fight with Estevez Brodie kicking a goal.

BWC claimed a 19-point victory as a late comeback from the Epenarra Saints fell short.

The momentum pendulum was swinging in the first half in a low scoring affair, as it was tied at seven points at quarter time before it was a seven-point advantage at the main break. But it was in the third quarter that the damage was done as the Saints could only manage a further seven points to BWC’s 20 points.

However, Epenarra would not go away, as they would have four scoring shots but only one would convert to a goal as BWC ran away victorious.

Nigel Small was best on the ground, with Kieran Kingston kicking two goals and Felix Brown.

BWC Captain Melvin Peterson was exceptionally reliable in the clash.

Ali Curung overcame a 20-point deficit to win in a thrilling match against YDU.

For what was nearly the third time in as many weeks, a draw was not out of the question as the first half signaled towards an arm wrestle with a five-point margin at both quarter time and halftime.

It was not until the third term that YDU went out to a 14-point lead. It seemed that YDU would go on to win especially with the first goal of the fourth going to YDU before out of nowhere, Ali Curung piled on four straight goals to steal the win by two points.
