St Mary's ruckman Brandyn Grenfell was the toast of the 33-time Men's Premier League champions on Saturday night.

Grenfell kicked the winning point after the final siren to break Waratah hearts and excite Saints fans in his side's 12.9 (81) to 12.8 (80) win in their Round 17 clash.

His goal from a free kick came after Tahs had led all day at TIO Stadium and by as much as 26 points midway through the second quarter.

In other games, fourth-placed Nightcliff won its sixth game in succession when they held off a fierce challenge from PINT at DXC Arena and fifth-placed Darwin Buffaloes ran away from Wanderers after quarter-time.

Magpie fans finally had something to smile about when the Palmerston Magpies snapped an eight-game losing streak after beating the Tiwi Bombers at Cazaly's Arena.

Grenfell recalled kicking a goal after the siren to win a game in his playing career, but never a point after his shot veered right from 50 metres out to clear the pack and give the Saints a one-point win.

"I kicked a goal a few years ago to get a win, but nothing like that before when we needed a score to get the points,'' he said.

"We thought we were always in the game despite being a bit flat in the first quarter after a big game in the wet last week and took a little time to hit our straps.

"But we showed we're a talented team and if we put our minds to it we can get some good results.''

Nightcliff outlasted a brave PINT at DXC Arena to win by eight points and keep their hopes of the double chance alive.

The Tigers trailed by two points at the last change but kicked three goals to one in the last quarter to win 9.6 (60) to 7.10 (52) and inflict another close loss on the unlucky Greenants.

Three-time premiership coach Chris Baksh said his side was forced to dig in against an opposition with their season on the line.

"We played a few young blokes and were impressed with their performances, Jack Hammond was great in the midfield and Daniel Quinn was very good,'' Baksh said.

Veteran Tiger and star utility Cameron Ilett left the ground with calf tightness in the second quarter and will miss the last minor round of the season against the Tiwi Bombers before returning for the finals.

Hammond, the consistent Ryan Nyhuis down back and Sam Overall were standouts for the Tigers, who are a game out of the top three and eight percentage points short of fourth-placed St Mary's.

The Buffaloes beat Wanderers by 72 points, with Jarrod Stokes strengthening his Nichols Medal claims with another high-possession game, while Ryan Pendlebury around the ball and Nick Favretto finding plenty of the footy.

Buffalo midfielder Tim Eldridge said the return of former Carlton and Brisbane midfielder Mitch Robinson had added experience and poise to the side after back-to-back losses to PINT and Nightcliff.

"As the game went on we started to straighten up in front of goals and use the ball a lot better, having some experience with Mitch and Matty Campbell there to steady the ship was a big plus,'' Eldridge said.

Former Nightcliff goalkicker Liam Holt-Fitz celebrated his 100th game with both clubs by booting four goals in the win.

Palmerston kicked seven goals to one after a close first half to beat the Tiwi Bombers by 44 points, Nichols medallist Eric Guthrie and former Bomber Ashton Hams dominating around the ground for the black and whites.

The win lifted Palmerston to seventh on the ladder and came on top of Josh Heath's Premier League coaching extension to the end of the 2024-25 NTFL season.
