Before first bounce of the BRFL: Mal Fox on Katherine South

Katherine South's pursuit of a fourth Big Rivers Football League premiership in five seasons kicks off against the Arnhem Crows at Katherine's Nitmiluk Oval on April 23.

The Crocodiles have won three flags since reforming in 2017 after an 18-year absence from the competition.

Mal Fox has been at the coaching helm for all of those triumphs and the losing 2019 preliminary final when a shot for goal after the final siren to win the game against the Crows missed.

Souths ended Eastside's run of five successive senior flags in the 2018 grand final and beat the Katherine Camels in the 2020 and 2021 deciders.

Fox expects the Souths-Camels rivalry to continue this season with Eastside and Ngukurr next in line on the premiership market.

"We're going for a fourth flag in five years and are pretty confident we can do it,'' Fox told the AFLNT.

"The only grand final we haven't made was the 2019 game and we probably weren't a good enough side to win the flag that year whichever way you look at it.

"This year we're pretty much the same side apart from a number of players who have moved interstate, namely our captain Lachy King, who has moved to South Australia with work.

"Kevin Turner is another one with him now on the Gold Coast.''

Fox declared King a "big out'' because of his close involvement in the renaissance since the club reformed five years ago.

"Lachy played through the midfield and was really good for us on and off the field in between stints with PINT in Darwin's NTFL through the off season,'' Fox said.

"But I expect to be a finals contender again. In the Territory you lose blokes but others come to town who can play a bit and they tend to take their place.

"So far we haven't got anyone of massive note, but we're certainly looking pretty good with the players at the club now.''

The Camels will be coached by former Palmerston premiership captain Mark Tyrrell and will be tough nuts to crack after falling short against Souths in the last two deciders.

Eastside will be again be coached by Cameron Kossack.

Daly River is the new side in the Big Rivers competition this year, adding an extra dimension to a league already containing community side Ngukurr, Northern Warlpiri Swans, Arnhem Crows and the Garrak Bombers.

The competition proper kicks off on Friday, April 22 when Eastside host the Ngukurr Bulldogs at Nitimiluk Oval.
