Before first bounce of the BRFL: Helen Lee on Arnhem Crows

Helen Lee and the Arnhem Crows are continuing a football journey that began in 2001 when they were known as the Bombers.

The Crows' club president has been the catalyst in launching the women's side that won the inaugural Big Rivers Football League premiership in 2020 and retained it last year.

The men have won six flags in their football life and are looking at a seventh when the 2022 season kicks off on April 22.

The Crows meet reigning premier Katherine South under lights at Nitmiluk Oval on April 23.

Lee won the Chemist Warehouse AFLW Community Ambassador award for the NT, one of seven awarded across the country for services to the Australian game.

Part of her reward was a trip to the Adelaide Oval last weekend to watch another side with the Crows label, the Adelaide Crows, beat Melbourne in the AFLW grand final.

Naturally the Crows were the side Lee supported on the day, joining the players and AFLW officials post-match during the presentations.

Back home the Arnhem Crows have just completed a tough two months of pre-season training.

"They've been working hard and are very dedicated and committed to winning the flag again and completing a threepeat of premierships,'' Lee said.

"There's 16 local girls and about the same number from Darwin and other places as we look to put a winning side together.

"Footy is very important to the girls socially and culturally and women's footy will only get bigger.''

The Crows women took their first steps in competition in schools competition before progressing to senior football where they have dominated the first two years of the Big Rivers league.

Ashanti Bush, now at the Gold Coast Suns and NTFL Nightcliff Tiger Hannah Turnbull won best on ground medals as the Crows beat Katherine South in the first two grand finals.
