2021/22 TIO NTFL Morris' Women's Premier League Prelim Preview

A Nightcliff-Waratah preliminary final in the Women's Premier League seems an appropriate step to take when you look at the finals history of both sides.

Finals veterans Waratah are back in the March action after a 12-month break, while Nightcliff is a game away from its first WPL grand final in only their third appearance at the business end of the season.

Both sides come into the knockout final with contrasting semi-final performances.

Tahs had 20 shots to goal to PINT's seven when evicting the defending premiers from the premiership race in their semi-final, while minor premiers Nightcliff struggled to get their game going against the slick moving Darwin Buffettes in the major semi-final.

The 33-point loss was only Nightcliff's second loss of the season, both of them coming at the hands of the confident Buffettes.

Coach Shannon Millar and her players held a post mortem at Monday night's training session to discuss the positives and negatives to come out of the loss.

"We did some stuff well and other stuff not so well, from which we reflected on where we have to improve and build on the positives,'' Millar said.

"We had a really good training session on Monday during which we reset a little bit in some areas. You'll see a Nightcliff side that's really looking forward to the challenge run out on the ground this week.''

The Tigers will again look to the experience of Eliza Morrison, Hannah Turnbull and Rhiannon Busch and exhuberance of Cassie McWilliam and the Hatzismalis sisters (Olivia and Sophia) to turn their on-field fortunes around this week.

They beat Tahs twice in the home and away season by sticking to basics like getting numbers around the ball and using teammates in a better position.

Waratah's skipper Lisa Roberts has spoken at length in recent weeks on the self belief under first year coach Heidi Thompson and that has shown up in big wins over traditional rival St Mary's and PINT in two knockout finals.

The red and white jumpers have been involved in 13 of the 17 WPL grand finals since 2004, winning eight of them in a commanding performance that does not look like winding down in the coming years.

And in accordance with tradition, Roberts around the middle and down back, Lisa Miceli and Stephanie O'Brien in front of goals and defensive general Lauren Pluker will again make it hard for their opponents to kick a winning score.
