UPDATE POSTED: 5:30pm Thursday 9 January

AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) advises the Round 13 fixture changes (below) issued at 1pm on Thursday, which says that the Women’s Premier League game between Tracy Village and the Palmerston Magpies was moving to Saturday has now been rolled back.

AFLNT attempted to align all games being played at Tracy Village on the same day but unfortunately, the women’s game between Tracy Village and the Palmerston Magpies has been unable to be moved so it will remain at its originally scheduled date and time of 4pm Sunday 12 January.

UPDATE POSTED: 1pm Thursday 9 January

AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) advises the following information regarding Round 13 games of the 2019/20 TIO NTFL season, which may be adversely impacted by tropical cyclone/weather activity in the area.

The advice from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) as of 10:38 am ACST Thursday 09 January 2020 is; “The tropical low is expected to continue moving in a west-south west direction near the coast of the northwest Top End during the remainder of today, before gradually shifting to the west-northwest on Friday. There is a risk of the low developing into a tropical cyclone later on Friday if it moves over the Van Diemen Gulf, or on Saturday as it moves offshore into the Timor Sea. The low could pass close to the Darwin area late Friday or early Saturday, bringing wet and windy conditions.”

Based on that advice, AFLNT has kept all fixtures as is, with the exception of the Friday night Under 18s and the Men’s Premier League between the Tiwi Bombers and Waratah. The Men’s Division 1 Tracy Village vs Southern Districts game scheduled for Tracy Village on Sunday has been moved to Saturday.

With regards to Saturday’s fixturing, at this stage, the only change will affect the Tiwi vs. Waratah game (as detailed below).

AFLNT staff will meet at 7am Saturday morning, provided it is safe to do so, and assess the situation for all other matches.

Should there be a need to make any changes, this will be communicated to all clubs and via AFLNT social and web channels ASAP.

When making decisions, AFLNT will be assessing the suitability of matches continuing; which includes the safety of participants, officials and patrons as well as the state of the facilities and the safe supply of power and water.

Friday night Under 18 fixtures moved to Sunday

Given that there is the potential of the system developing into a cyclone on Friday evening, AFLNT has rescheduled all four Under 18 Friday evening games to Sunday 12 January.

Under 18 Girls – Nightcliff vs St Mary’s – 8:15am Sunday 12 January – TIO Stadium
Under 18 Girls – Waratah vs Darwin Buffettes – 8:30am Sunday 12 January – TIO Oval 2
Under 18 Boys – Wanderers vs St Mary’s – 9:45am Sunday 12 January – TIO Stadium
Under 18 Boys – Southern Districts vs Waratah – 10:00am Sunday 12 January – TIO 2

Men’s Premier League match – Tiwi Bombers vs Waratah moved to Tracy Village

We have been advised by Police on the Tiwi Islands to not go ahead with the fixture on the Island.

Therefore, the match will be moved to Tracy Village Oval, and will remain at 1:30pm on Saturday 11 January.

Sunday Tracy Village Men's Division 1 game now on Saturday

To coincide with the Men’s Premier League match between the Tiwi Bombers and Waratah now being played at Tracy Village on Sunday, the Men’s Division 1 Tracy Village vs Southern Districts game has been moved from Sunday to Saturday.

Men’s Div 1 – Tracy Village vs Southern Districts – 11:00am Saturday 11 January
Men’s Premier League – Tiwi Bombers vs Waratah – 1:30pm Saturday 11 January

This post was originally published to say that the Women's Premier League game between Tracy Village and Palmerston was also moving to Saturday but a subsequent update has left that game fixtured for Sunday.

Please note: Regardless of whether or not BoM issues a cyclone warning, the six games mentioned above have been re-fixtured (as detailed). Whether further changes need to be made will be dependent on future advice.

AFLNT Manager of Community Football, Emily Wastle-Hopkins thanked clubs for their cooperation.

“Unfortunately, Mother Nature is well and truly out of our control, but we will continue to monitor the situation and act on advice from BoM.

“We thank clubs for their cooperation and understanding throughout this process and encourage fans to keep across our social media channels for any further updates,” she said.

A final reminder that in regards to cyclones, the TIO NTFL competition accounts for this in Appendix 4 of the AFLNT Rules & Regulations.

  1. When a cyclone watch is declared, matches may continue at the discretion of AFLNT
  2. When a cyclone warning is declared, all matches for the duration of that warning must be abandoned immediately, including any match that is in progress at the time of the declaration.
  3. If a match is abandoned under the AFLNT Extreme Weather policy the provisions of these Rules & Regulations shall apply.

What happens to any games that fail to go ahead, or any game that cannot be completed but has commenced, is also accounted for in the competition's rules.

All other major storms and lightning is covered by the National Extreme Weather Policy, which is detailed here; https://www.aflnt.com.au/news/2019/ntfl-extreme-weather-policy-reminder

UPDATE POSTED: 8pm Wednesday 8 January

AFLNT advises that we are in discussions with the Bureau of Meteorology and clubs about the cyclone and weather activity expected over the coming days.

As of 8pm, Wednesday 8 January; the only game that currently looks like it will be impacted is the Round 13 Men's Premier League match between the Tiwi Bombers and Waratah.

We are working with clubs and providers for a contingency and will provide an update as soon as possible.

At this stage, all other games will go ahead as fixtured but in accordance with AFLNT's rules and regulations, especially regarding extreme weather.

In particular regard to cyclones, Appendix 4 of the AFLNT Rules & Regulations states;

  2. When a cyclone warning is declared, all matches for the duration of that warning must be abandoned immediately, including any match that is in progress at the time of the declaration.
