2020 BRFL Finals start this Saturday

2020 finals in the BRFL will feature the Swans

The Big Rivers Football League (BRFL) heads into finals this weekend in Katherine, with the three new teams to the competition in 2020 set to feature.

The Men's and Women's qualifying finals will be on Saturday evening with newcomers, the Arnhem Crows taking on Katherine South in the women’s match before the Katherine Camels play Katherine South in the men's draw.

The Crows, who finished their first season in the BRFL as women's minor premiers, are yet to beat South this season, who themselves have shown remarkable improvement after not winning a game in 2019.

The Katherine Camels and Katherine South men have played each other twice this year, and it's split one win apiece, but the most recent encounter was only last Saturday with South prevailing by 55 points.

The elimination finals on Sunday will see the other new women's outfit; the Tindal Magpies take on reigning premiers Eastside before the two 'remote' men's teams, the Northern Warlpiri Swans plays the third debutant for the season, the Ngukurr Bulldogs.
Tindal and Eastside have played each other twice with the Magpies claiming the full eight points on offer.

The men’s match will be a cracking one between two sides that have built a rivalry over the last 12 months. The Bulldogs and Swans have met each other three times, starting in the Quitline Regional Challenge in Darwin last October, which Ngukurr came out on top.

The Swans achieved redemption in the final of the BRFL Umpires Carnival in June and backed it up with a 23-point win in Round 6.

AFLNT Regional Development Manager for Katherine, Gavin May explained the fixturing was to help ensure maximum capacity crowds could enjoy exciting BRFL finals action.

"Due to COVID-19 capacity restrictions, we have fixtured the first week of finals across two days so that we can make sure as many family and friends as possible can attend the games this weekend.

"It's fantastic to see all three new sides in finals. The standard of football has been of an excellent standard, and it will only get better throughout finals.

"Well-known NTFL award-winning players like Lisa Roberts and Will Farrer, as well as locals Jamie Bryant and Elijah Kelly, will all be on show, while Sunday's Elimination Final between the Swans and Bulldogs will see two of the most exciting sides in the NT in action," he said.

The grand finals of the BRFL are set to take place on Saturday 26 September.
