Katherine Camels and Katherine Souths players show respect postgame

AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) has announced amendments to the 2020 Big Rivers Football League (BRFL) fixture, with a general bye to take place on the weekend of 21 August to accommodate for the recently announced AFL matches in Darwin.

Further, AFLNT has confirmed the dates and times for the remaining fixtures in the 2020 BRFL season. Round 7 and 8 will be played on the weekends of 7 August and 14 August before the bye. The season will resume with the No More Round on Saturday 29 August. The Doug Kelly Medal will now be awarded on 20 September followed by the BRFL Grand Final on 26 September.

The upcoming Dreamtime game in Darwin has Territorian footy fan rejoicing. AFLNT Regional Development Manager for Katherine, Gavin May, said there has been great interest from the BRFL clubs and community to travel to Darwin for the game, leading to the decision to implement a league-wide bye on the corresponding weekend.

"This is a special occasion that may never return to the NT again and I certainly don't want to stand in the way of people getting the opportunity to attend this match."

With just four rounds left to be played in the BRFL season, the reigning premiers, the Katherine Camels, sit atop the ladder one win ahead of the Ngukurr Bulldogs and Northern Walpiri Swans, while Tindal currently lead the BRFL women's competition one win ahead of the Arnhem Crows and Katherine South.

May highlighted the quality of football being played this season in the BRFL.

"We have had a great start to our season with great matches in both the men and women’s competition. The standard of footy has been high, as has the umpiring, and both competitions are still wide open."

AFLNT would like to remind supporters, players, coaches, and volunteers to follow the COVID health and safety protocols when attending games.

Entry to the 2020 BRFL is as follows:

$7 for adults
$2 for children aged 15 years and under
Free for children aged 3 years and under
