Barry’s the best NT volunteer of the year

Jamie Barry 2018 NT Volunteer of the year

Congratulations to Jamie Barry of Nightcliff Football Club and NT Thunder Football Club who has won a trip of a lifetime to this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final for himself and a friend after being named 2018 Northern Territory Volunteer of the Year.

Barry was nominated by Nighcliff Tigers Football Club Secretary, Brett Walker who said it would come as no surprise if he won the NT Volunteer of the Year.

“Jamie has been committed to the sport of AFL his whole life, he is a conscientious and hardworking club member. He came to our club as a player with the Spartans and after sustaining injuries wanted to continue his membership with the Nightcliff Tigers Football Club as a volunteer and he has been committed to this fully for over the last three NTFL seasons.”

Barry runs water for a number of Nightcliff’s men’s sides, as well as acts as a sports trainer right across the different grades for both the men’s and women’s teams.

At NT Thunder he is an ever-reliable and hardworking volunteer who does everything from filling water bottles, to assisting the sports trainers and other volunteers.

“He is a role model and acts to support players as a volunteer and mentor providing junior players with advice and support,” Walker said.

AFLNT CEO Stuart Totham said Barry was a deserving winner of this year’s award.

“We are very fortunate in the NT to have so many willing and exemplary members in the community who put their hand up and do that little bit extra for the good of the game. Without them we wouldn’t have footy every weekend, so I thank Jamie, who is a committed member of both Nightcliff and NT Thunder, and all of those other hard-working people and groups for giving of themselves so generously,” he said.
