AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) congratulates the umpires who have been appointed for the Senior and Under 18 Grand Finals this weekend, kicking off this evening, Friday 17 March at TIO Stadium.
The 2022/23 season has seen a reshape in the structure of umpiring appointments, with a three-person panel sitting weekly to appoint umpires across all TIO NTFL competitions. Appointments Board Chair, Greg Ostler says, “I congratulate all umpires appointed to the TIO NTFL Premier League Grand Finals. All have shown resilience, dedication, and professionalism throughout the whole season.”
The umpires selected to officiate this weekend see a variety of both local NT talent and umpires taking part in the Interstate Umpires program. The AFLNT Umpiring Selection Principles have been of significance in the overall appointments of the Women’s and Men’s Premier League Grand Final umpires
Selected umpires have shown professionalism, match management skills, teamwork, a commitment to continued training, and technical skills required to umpire in the Northern Territory’s top-tier football competition.
TIO NTFL umpiring stalwart Mark Noonan will umpire his 10th Men’s Premier League Grand Final this Saturday night as Waratah take on Southern Districts. Noonan, recently announced as the 2022/23 TIO NTFL Umpire of the Year, will overtake current Head Field Umpires coach, Simon Walker as the field umpire to officiate in the most TIO NTFL Grand Finals.
Congratulations to all umpires selected across all Grand Finals, see full umpire appointments below.

Umpires will judge the Best on Ground player for all Grand Finals, except the Premier League matches. A quality panel has been assembled to help decide the best performer of each Premier League game and deem who will receive the Chaney and Williams Medal.
Men’s Premier League Chaney Medal Panel:
- Grey Morris – sports journalist and AFLNT Life Member
- Tash Medbury – Palmerston Magpies player, AFLNT Life Member, and ABC sports commentator
- Ashley Manicaros - AFLNT Commentator, retired TIO NTFL umpire, current member of the Umpires Selection Panel
Women’s Premier League Williams Medal Panel:
- Debbie Lee – inaugural female Australian Football Hall of Famer
- Grey Morris – sports journalist and AFLNT Life Member
- Peter Atkinson – AFLNT Hall of Fame inductee and AFLNT Life Member.
As is stated in the TIO NTFL By-Laws each member of the panel will award votes to the players they deem to be the best and fairest participating in the match. Each judge will watch the game independently and then vote 5-4-3-2-1, whereby five votes are awarded to the player they determine to be the best performer, four votes to the second-best and so on.
An AFLNT official will then collate and tally all votes and announce a winner. In the case of a tie, a countback will take place, and the winner will be declared based on whoever received the most ‘five votes’. If the result is still tied, then it will be declared on the most ‘four votes’ and so on. Each grand final will have a best-on-ground medal, sponsored by TIO but presented by a family representative for whom the medal is named after.
Skip the queue tomorrow! Tickets to the Senior Grand Final Day can be purchased here.
