This weekend marks the first round of the 2022 Sun Cable Barkly Australia Football League (BAFL) A-Grade Men Premiership season with some new additions joining the competition.
2022 sees reigning premiers Sporties Spitfires, YDU, Barkly Work Camp and Janapurlalki Eagles return to the field along with Ali Curung and Canteen Creek who re-join the competition and Jalajirrpa Mission debuting for the first time.
AFLNT Regional Development Manager for Barkly/Tennant Creek Wayne Green said he is looking forward to a great season of footy with the seven teams taking the field.
“Ali Curung re-joins the competition after a season off and we’ll also see Canteen Creek back on the track for the first time since 2019 which is really exciting,” he added.
“The addition of Jalajirrpa Mission as the seventh team in the A-grade competition shows the healthy growth in participation across the Tennant Creek region.
“This season we welcome back NO MORE Round during Round 5 and this season we will be partnering with the Northern Territory Government’s Alcohol and Other Drugs team to promote their Alcohol Free - Give Grog the Boot theme across all footy venues and facilities.
“In addition to the Men’s A-Grade competition, the Under 10’s commenced last week and we are building towards a start for our Under 13’s and 16’s, although most exciting of all is what is happening in the Barkly Women’s space.
“Immediately following the AFLNT Community Footy Roadshow which had a focus on female footy in the Barkly region, a women’s training commenced on the Friday evening. It was a huge success which has lead to the commencement of weekly Monday evening training sessions with planning under way for a series of trial matches during the current school term.
The Sun Cable BAFL A-grade Grand Final is set to play on Saturday 17 September.
