Barkly women create footy history in Tennant Creek

A new chapter in the history of Barkly footy will be written this weekend as the Sun Cable Barkly Australian Football League Senior Women’s competition launches.
Spitfires, YDU, Ali Curung and Canteen Creek will feature in a nine round home and away season followed by two weeks of finals, culminating in the inaugural Senior Women’s Grand Final on Saturday September 17.
AFLNT Regional Development Manager for Barkly, Wayne Green said after expanding the competition to provide the women of Barkly the opportunity to play footy, it has been amazing how quickly interest developed.
“From having a focus on female footy at the AFLNT 2022 Community Football Roadshow event held at the local High School on April 4, to having a four-team competition just three months later, is a credit to all who have been involved in the journey,” Green added.
“Training commenced on the Friday after the Roadshow and it wasn’t long before a Monday evening session was added.

“A three-week trial series between Spitfires and YDU raised interest in the remote communities of Ali Curung and Canteen Creek with all four teams then participating in a pre-season trial day last weekend which was a huge success!”
“After the success of the trial day, it is really exciting to launch the official Senior Women competition this weekend for the first time ever!”

Round 1 sees Spitfires play YDU at 10am, followed by Canteen Creek taking on Ali Curung from 11.10am on Saturday 9 July at Purkiss Reserve. Gates open at 9am.
