Panel assembled for the Women's Best on Ground Medal

Brenda Cubillo and Lisa Roberts

AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) has entrusted Stuart Davis, Natasha Medbury and Heidi Thompson to decide on this season’s Women’s Premier League Grand Final best on ground.

The Williams Medal, presented by the League’s major sponsor, TIO, will be presented by Brenda Cubillo on Saturday evening following the Southern Districts vs Waratah grand final and will go to the player adjudged best on the ground by the three-person panel.

In all other grand finals this weekend it will be the field umpires who collectively award votes to the player they judge to be the best and fairest from the match. All players will receive a medal as well as a TIO branded Sherrin footy.

Davis has been a constant figure in NTFL circles for some time but this season took up a new role as the main play-by-play commentator on the AFLNTv coverage of the Women’s Premier League. Medbury, a player for the Palmerston Magpies and football commentator herself, has been selected as a way to honour her recent admission to AFLNT Life Membership status. And Thompson is a natural choice as she continues to keep her finger on the Territory footy pulse as the NT Thunder Women’s Academy Manager.

Last March, it was Waratah co-captain and club stalwart, Lisa Roberts who picked up her second Women’s Premier League best on ground award for her premiership heroics.

As is stated in the NTFL By-Laws (2019-20 edition) each member of the panel will award votes to the players they deem to be the best and fairest participating in the match.

Each judge will watch the game independently and then vote 5-4-3-2-1, whereby five votes are awarded to the player they determine to be the best performer, four votes to the second-best and so on.

An AFLNT official will then collate and tally all votes.

In the case of a tie, a countback will take place, and the winner will be declared on the basis of whoever received the most 'five votes'. If the result is still tied, then it will be declared on the most 'four votes' and so on.

In all other grand finals this weekend it will be the field umpires who collectively award votes to the player they judge to be the best and fairest from the match.

Congratulations also goes to Tayla Maddock from Southern Districts on her Women's Division 2 best on ground performance in last night's 4.11.35 to 0.0.0 grand final win over PINT.
