Show your support for road safety and the Northern Territory’s goal of zero deaths and injuries on Territory roads by coming to the TIO NTFL Men’s Premier League Round 8 tripleheader at TIO Stadium this Saturday 23 November.
On average, each year, 43 people die, and over 500 people are seriously injured on NT roads. Tragically 23 people have already lost their lives on Territory roads in 2019.
Road safety is a team effort, which is why the Territory Labor Government has partnered with AFLNT to raise awareness at the Towards Zero Road Safety Round this weekend.
The men’s and women’s premier league team captains will all be changing things up this weekend; they will wear a symbolic Towards Zero guernsey marked with the number zero.
All players will also be invited to wear yellow armbands to honour those who have lost their lives and to remind players and supporters that everyone can do their part to keep people safe on Territory roads.
Assistant Minister of Sport, Tony Sievers said road safety was a shared responsibility.
“A large portion of the Northern Territory’s road trauma is related to people making poor choices; each serious crash has an ongoing and devastating impact on our families and the community – so many could be prevented.
“We all need to be on the ball on and off the field – so please drive safe – there’s more to lose than just a game of footy,” he said.
AFLNT Manager of Community Football and Club Development, Emily Wastle-Hopkins said the League was proud to partner with Towards Zero to help share an important message.
“Every weekend there are hundreds of families and people driving to and from the footy for NTFL, sometimes they are short trips down the road, and other times it’s close to three hours to Jabiru or Katherine.
“No matter the destination, we want people to continue coming and going safely, so we’re doing our bit to help spread that message because one death on or related to our roads is one death too many,” she said.
