AFLNT Statement: CAFL Competitions and Traeger Park

TRAEGER

AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) has been in ongoing discussions with the Alice Springs Town Council (ASTC) recently regarding access to Traeger Park for community football in season 2023.

AFLNT is pleased to advise that with the support of the ASTC, both the Central Australia Football League (CAFL) Town and Community Competitions will now be played this season, including access to Traeger Park for football competitions. The ASTC has also extended that permission to include talent programs, the all-abilities program, school competitions and other programs.

The ASTC still needs to complete their council processes and requirements next week regarding resolution reversal. AFLNT supports and respects the need for these processes to be completed prior to this matter being fully resolved.

This is a fantastic outcome for more than 1,300 participants who have the opportunity to participate in these competitions and programs each season and will now get access to Traeger Park in 2023.

AFLNT thanks the ASTC for their support and consideration through these discussions. Without their preparedness to work to find a solution, we would not be able to announce this significant development.

The CAFL Town competition commenced on 26 April with matches having been played at alternative venues since, while the CAFL Community competition will commence on May 20 with an eight-round fixture, split between Traeger Park (four rounds) and community venues (four rounds).

The 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season Round 16 match between Melbourne and GWS Giants will be played at Traeger Park as fixtured, with match details to be confirmed.

AFLNT has committed to investing $50,000 towards developing a facilities and infrastructure plan in Alice Springs and Central Australia, to benefit local communities and ensure football thrives in the region. Discussions with the NT Government and the Federal Government are ongoing in relation to the infrastructure needs of communities throughout Central Australia.

AFLNT will endeavour to revise the Town Competition fixture to minimise overlap with senior netball fixtures and is committed to working with the Alice Springs Netball Association on a longer-term plan around collaboration.
