Stevens and Bush selected in the 2021 National Academy Squads

Stevens and Bush Academy Squads

The 2021 NAB AFL and AFLW Academy Squads have been announced with Territorian draft prospects, Ned Stevens and Ashanti Bush, named in the Men’s and Women’s squads respectively.

Stevens joins a list of 21 draft hopefuls on the NAB AFL Academy Squad while Bush has been named in the NAB AFLW Academy Squad of 20.

AFLNT Talent Manager, Simon Hargrave, praised the two NT selections and their draft prospects.

“We’re excited for the opportunity that has been presented to Ned and Ashanti. Both have stood out in NT talent programs and competitions and we’ve no doubt that the National Academy will provide an invaluable experience that will prepare them for the elite level,” Hargrave said.

Standing 195cm tall, Stevens has impressed as a ruckman and a deep forward, using his height and impressive leaping ability to service his teammates in the midfield. He is tied to the Gold Coast SUNS Academy and plays for Waratah in the NTFL alongside his older brother Joel who has transitioned to SANFL football at West Adelaide Football Club.

“Ned is a genuine draft prospect for 2021. He has great breakaway pace, especially given his size. He uses his body well and is strong in aerial contests,” Hargrave said.

Bush is a forward with great pace, football IQ, and kicking ability. She hails from Barunga NT, where she recently won the Best and Fairest player award for the Arnhem Crows in the Big Rivers Football League. She represents the Darwin Buffettes in the NTFL where she has won two Under 18 Girls Grand Finals and is a key component in the Buffettes finals push for the 2020/21 season.

“Ashanti possesses draftable qualities as she has incredible speed, agility, and power. She is a dangerous and illusive player who would not look out of place in the AFLW,” Hargrave said.
