Community teams join in on 2020 TIO CAFL finals series

CAFL community action

As the 'town' competitions in the TIO CAFL season head into the preliminary final weekend, the community competitions join in on the finals activity this Sunday.

Due to COVID-19, the separation of the remote Central Australia community teams into two divisions was disbanded, with instead all 11 teams joining the Central Desert Senior Men's competition for season 2020.

However, going into finals, the teams have been separated into a top-six Division 1, and bottom-five Division 2, meaning any of the 11 teams can still win an appropriate premiership.

After dropping only one-game each during the minor rounds, Western Arrernte and Ltyentye Apurte have earned a rest in Division 1, with Ltyentye Apurte so far on track to claim back-to-back premierships.

The first of two Division 1 elimination finals will take place at TIO Traeger Park at 12pm when Plenty Highway face Papunya, which is the second time in as many weeks given the two met in Round 11. That result went the way of Plenty Highway to the tune of 32 points.

The second Senior Men's Division1 elimination final is between Laramba, who are no strangers to CAFL premiership success, and Ti Tree, who is one of only two teams to beat Laramba this season.

In Division 2, Yuendumu will enjoy a rest while it waits to take on either Areyonga or Mt Allan, who meet in a qualifying semi-final at 4pm. After missing out on the 2019 Community Cup Grand Final win by a single point, Mt Allan is out for redemption, but Areyonga knows it's up to the task after claiming the victory when the two sides met in Round 5.

The last game of the day will be the big Division 2 Elimination Final between Nyirripi and Titjikala. The Demons have shown tremendous grit this year, making the almost 900-kilometre round-trip each round. Meanwhile, Titjikala is also to be commended for showing up nearly every week despite not having much luck on the field.

In the MacDonnell Regional Council Under 18 Boys, the top four teams from the six-team competition have progressed to finals. If 2020 results are anything to go by then, Papunya is the team to beat after it won all nine of its minor rounds.

Papunya can secure a ticket straight through to the Grand Final with a win this Sunday morning, but standing in its way will be last year's premiers, Yuendumu.

Regardless, it's a double-chance game so, the team that misses out this weekend will have one more shot against the winner of the Under 18 Boys Elimination Final between Plenty Highway and Ltyentye Apurte. And it's hard to tip a winner in this one since they've each enjoyed a win against one another this season.
