Learn Earn Legend! Indigenous Careers Expo

Learn Earn Legend! Indigenous Careers Expo

AFLNT is inviting Indigenous people aged between 14-24 the inaugural Learn Earn Legend! Indigenous Career and Employment Expo, on Thursday May 26th, from 9am-3pm at TIO Stadium Darwin.

This weekend’s AFL Indigenous Round will see the AFL continue to spread the Learn. Earn. Legend! message with the start of Indigenous Careers Expos across the country, with all members of the Indigenous community encouraged to attend.
As part of Dreamtime at the G celebrations, the Melbourne expo will be held tomorrow, Saturday, May 21 between 1pm and 5pm at the Korin Gamadji Indigenous Institute at Punt Road Oval, Richmond with the support of the Richmond Football Club.
More than 35 employers or education institutions will be exhibiting with jobs on offer and a resume creation service on-hand during the day to assist. The day will also encompass a registration and screening process for the Under 15 and Under 23 Indigenous state teams.
Collingwood recruit Andrew Krakouer and former AFL stars Andrew McLeod and Matthew Whelan will be making appearances at the event alongside musician Kutcha Edwards and international athlete Kyle Vander Kuyp. Traditional games will be played on Punt Road Oval for children, while there will be a free lunch and giveaways for those that submit a resume upon attendance.
The Learn. Earn. Legend! Indigenous Careers Expos will continue in Perth on Sunday May 22 at Patersons Stadium from 9am-11am prior to the West Coast Eagles v Western Bulldogs match, in Darwin at TIO Stadium in the lead-up to the Richmond and Port Adelaide match on Thursday May 26 from 9am-3pm and in Adelaide at the Westpac Centre, AAMI Stadium from 12pm-4pm on Sunday June 5 prior to the Port Adelaide v Carlton match.
"I am delighted to see the AFL joining the Federal Government to promote the Learn. Earn. Legend! message to young Indigenous Australians," Mark Arbib, Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development and Minister for Sport said.
"Indigenous players feature strongly in the AFL and provide great role models for their communities. With the AFL encouraging young people to stay in school, get a good education and then move into jobs we can get the Learn. Earn. Legend! to a wider number of young people.
"These careers expos are a great chance for young indigenous people to see the great range of job options that are open to them."
The AFL’s National Community Engagement Manager Jason Mifsud sees the Learn. Earn. Legend! partnership as an integral part of the AFL’s Indigenous programs.
"The AFL congratulates the Federal Government for its efforts in spreading the Learn. Earn. Legend! message," Mr Mifsud said.
"AFL involvement with the Learn. Earn. Legend! message in 2011 stretches across the Indigenous All Stars team, through the use of ambassadors and role models and now through to facilitating an event where the football playing and supporting Indigenous community are exposed to practical job opportunities.
"Education and employment is a building block of all of the AFL’s Indigenous programs, and we hope that football can again assist in bringing about positive outcomes for Indigenous people via the expos in Melbourne, Perth, Darwin and Adelaide."
LEARN. EARN. LEGEND! Indigenous Careers Expos around the country will be delivered in partnership between the Federal Government, the AFL, AFL Victoria, the Western Australian Football Commission, AFL Northern Territory and the South Australian National Football League.
