The Northern States Cup brings together the best Under 14 school sides from the emerging markets of the ACT, New South Wales, Northern Territory and Queensland. Each school has progressed to the finals series through winning their respective state pathway. Schools attending this year’s competition were Lyneham High School from ACT, St Ignatius College Riverview, New South Wales and Helensvale State High School from the Gold Coast Queensland.

St Johns College won the inaugural NT Thunder Cup in early August after defeating Dripstone in the Grand Final which was played as a curtain raiser to the Northern Territory Football Club and Morningside match at TIO Stadium. AFLNT umpire Luke Collister was selected by Umpiring Development Manager Mark Noonan to attend the trip and put his skills on display with other states umpires also attending the trip.

The location for the Northern Sates Cup was Blacktown Olympic Park the new home of the Western Sydney (GWS, it’s in your backyard) AFL 18th license. After an early start (6am Darwin Airport) the St Johns College Under 14 side arrived in Sydney around midday. The first game was against Helensvale state school under lights on Friday night. Unfortunately Helensvale proved to be far too strong for the smaller St Johns College team. Riverview also made light work of a smaller ACT team which meant that St Johns would take on Lyneham in the second match.

In the second game St Johns looked more at home with beautiful sunny conditions allowing the small quick runners to put their talent on display. It took 3 minutes before Leeson Dickenson from Tennant Creek put the first goal on the board. St Johns controlled the first half of the game but ACT made a comeback in the third quater. When William Rioli combined with his Tiwi contunerpart Jack Munkara St Johns were well and truly home. Overall they finished in third spot and they thoroughly enjoyed the second game at Blacktown oval.
