The Banyan Hawks defeated the Middle Camp Lions (11.12.78 – 9.5.59) in the 2021 Gunbalanya Grand Final on Saturday, marking the first end to a footy season in the community since 2018 due to Sorry Business.

Before first bounce, Banyan Hawks Captain Ishmael Warramara said he was excited to get out onto the field and play in another Grand Final after three years without a competition.

“I like playing football for Banyan Hawks because it is my family team, and we have a lot of support from elders, the community and players that have passed away,” he said.

“We have been training on Monday and Thursdays and a lot of boys are interested and come down to have a go. We also love to go to the pool for recovery.

“I’m looking forward to win the flag this year because in 2014 we lost to Injalak. I really want to win for all the past and present players and the people who have passed away.”

Middle Camp Lions Coach, Kenneth Mangiru said the game would be celebrated regardless of how the result ends up.

“My belief is it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it is important to celebrate the game regardless as it is a good opportunity for younger kids play in a Grand Final and also give them the opportunity to learn for future games.”

On game day the Gunbalanya community joined in the Grand Final footy celebrations and was very proud and enthusiastic about the competition. There were flags and various other decorations created for both teams, colouring of hair and painting of cars in team colours.

Both teams look forward to playing more football next season with commencement date to be confirmed.
