AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) has been working closely with the Northern Territory Police, the Jabiru Bombers Football Club and the AFL Integrity Department following the incident that occurred on Sunday night where members of the Jabiru Football Club are alleged to have attempted to take alcohol and drugs into Gunbalanya.
AFLNT understands the six players in question have been stood down by the Jabiru Football Club, a decision the League supports.
In addition to any legal processes the NT Police may choose to pursue, those players will be subject to investigation for breach of the AFLNT Code of Conduct & Conditions of Entry (category 2).
AFLNT will also work with the Jabiru Football Club and local authorities on a plan to help mitigate and minimise unwanted behaviour or instances, such as those alleged to have taken place on Sunday.
AFLNT Manager of Community Football, Rosanna De Santis said it was a disappointing incident, but she appreciated the Jabiru Football Club’s cooperation.
“The Jabiru Football Club is heavily reliant on players from Gunbalanya to play in the NTFL Men’s Division 2 competition, and this is not an incident the club nor AFLNT condone.
“We thank them for their quick action in stepping down the players in question, and we look forward to working with them to make sure incidences of this nature do not occur again.”
The six players will be issued their AFLNT investigation notices early next week and will have the due-process (5 business days) to respond. It is after this point that a determination regarding penalty will be made.
