AFLNT Umpire recruitment begins

Umpires in the NTFL 2016/17 local Grand Final

AFL Northern Territory is holding the annual Umpiring Come and Try night this Wednesday August 30, starting at 5.40pm on TIO Oval 2 ahead of the 2017/18 TIO NTFL Season which begins in October.

AFLNT Umpiring Development Officer Sam Cunningham encourages anyone to come down and have a go.

“In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in the number of young people and particularly females who are keen to get involved with umpiring for AFLNT. It’s a great way for people to develop friendships, leadership skills and of course their own confidence.

“Umpiring is something that the whole family can be involved in, regardless of gender, background, previous AFL experience or fitness level” Cunningham said.

“Last year we had 244 registered umpires for the NTFL and we need to reach a minimum of 278 umpires to fill the weekly requirements of the NTFL competition which has 49 games a weekend’.

“Out of our 244 umpires our group is made up by a third of Under 18’s. We’ve got over 45 females as well so it’s a really diverse group aged from just 13 years old right through to some of our goals umpires still waving the flags in their 70’s” Cunningham said.

Season training is held on Monday and Wednesday nights at TIO Stadium with NTFL matches played on the weekend.
