Round 8 of the TIO NTFL Season is the “Road Safety Round” and two of the NTFL’s clubs will alter their traditional playing strip in support of promoting the key road safety message this weekend.
The Tiwi Bombers and the Palmerston Magpies have both agreed to wear a unique seatbelt emblazoned guernsey to promote the importance of wearing seatbelts. The teams face off at TIO Stadium at 7:30pm on Saturday night.
Tiwi Bombers Chairman Alan McGill said that the Tiwi Bombers were proud to support this cause.
"We lost one of our founding members due to a car accident, so we as a football club support the message of wearing seatbelts especially in remote communities where the wearing of seatbelts is almost non-existent," said Alan McGill.
The Road Safety Round is a joint initiative of AFLNT and TIO as part of their sponsorship of the TIO NTFL.
"TIO is proud to be supporting this initiative again in 2011," said Michael Hoare, General Manager Insurance.
"Driving without a seatbelt continues to be a major contributing factor to our road toll. This is one of the many ways we can do something positive about promoting the "Seatbelts Save Lives" message," said Mr Hoare.
AFLNT CEO Tony Frawley welcomes this initiative by TIO and congratulates both clubs on taking a stand.
"AFLNT is committed to delivering positive messages in conjunction with our major partner TIO which we have done for the past two years via Club Education sessions and rebranding of the finals Series to the "Seatbelts Save Lives" message."
"AFLNT applauds the initiative of both clubs for stepping outside the box and demonstrating their support for this fantastic concept."
The NTFL Umpires Association has also supported this campaign and are altering their Premier League Umpires kits to display the "Always Wear Your Seatbelts" logo.
"We are the people in charge of making people safe on the field by enforcing the rules and laws of the game and we hope that assisting with this initiative we can assist our players, supporters, officials and volunteers to heed the road safety message," said Umpiring Development Manager Mark Noonan.
The Road Safety Clash is the late game of a triple header at TIO Stadium on Saturday with Waratah taking on Wanderers at 2:30pm and St Marys going head to head against Southern Districts at 5:00pm.
