Young Tiwi role model shines

Simone Minkara

Simone Munkara is a year 8 student at Xavier Catholic College in Wurrumiyanga, Tiwi Islands. Her teachers describe her as a natural leader and a role model for her peers and the young children on Bathurst Island.

“Coming to the Michael Long Centre has made me know I want to go to boarding school.”

As a returning leader, Simone Munkara, recently attended the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre (MLLLC) Education and Leadership Program. Munkara is motivated to learn, have new experiences and says she “wants to be a leader for the young kids on Tiwi,” and that’s exactly what she is.

Munkara says she’s learned a lot about leadership at the MLLLC and that’s why she was an advocate for the year 7 girls to come – so they could learn about the AFL values, leadership, and themselves. Her message to young ones is to go to school, learn and finish school so they can make their families proud and be a voice for their community.

The talented young student strives towards these goals daily by attending school and challenging her peers to be their best. Her teacher says she is “confident within herself and motivated to pursue her education.” We’ve loved having Simone at the MLLLC and look forward to hearing more of her story as she pursues her education and her dreams!
