MLLLC EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS KICK OFF

The Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre (MLLLC) has had its first two groups of remote indigenous students participate in their education and leadership programs for 2016.

The Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre (MLLLC) has had its first two groups of remote indigenous students participate in their education and leadership programs for 2016.
Nine Indigenous girls from Lajamanu, followed by fourteen boys from Maningrida participated in the week long program based at the MLLLC.
To be selected for the program, students must have a school attendance rate of 80% or higher and display consistent good behaviour in the classroom. The program focuses on leadership and identifying a student’s passions, and highlights the importance of completing secondary education in order for students to strive and achieve their potential.
Students participated in AFL skill development sessions, fitness testing, umpiring and coaching workshops, and a range of education sessions relating to health and community improvement.
Boarding schools visits are an integral part of the program where students engaged in specialised classroom activities including science, music, and cooking lessons which many have never experienced in their respective community.
In 2015, the MLLLC welcomed nine education intakes across seven regional and remote regions.
Recently appointed Manager of MLLLC Rychelle Vines said after a highly successful first couple of intakes, she is excited to see the program expand with 22 intakes across 11 regional and remote communities throughout the Territory planned for the year.
“We have 13 remote and regional development managers working tirelessly across many areas of the NT to improve classroom attendance and behaviour through football.”
“Providing students with the opportunity to identify the contributions they can make in life and how this can be achieved, is an essential step towards achieving these outcomes,” she said.
