Women's Footy at the AFLCA Easter Lightning Carnival

AFL Central Australia is proud to announce that this year women’s footy is coming to the 2012 Easter Lightning Carnival.

Last year AFL Central Australia tested the waters by running an exhibition match on the Sunday of the carnival. Female competitors registered on the day and we put them in one of the two teams.

The Easter Lightning Carnival competition is a round robin event with each match consisting of 2 x 15 minute halves, where the teams get to battle it out over three days to see who the ultimate winner is.

We have six women’s footy teams who will become part of the 2012 Easter Lightning Carnival action. They are 2 x teams from Western Aranda, 1 x Central Arrernte, 1 x Santa Teresa, 1 x Federals and 1 x Maxi Taxi’s.

Regional Manager, Andy Hood, revealed "When we sent out the registration forms we included one for women’s teams to see if we could get a women’s division started".

"We are overwhelmed by the response we have received. The fact that the community members have gotten onboard and created their own standalone teams for this fantastic event is awesome".

"This is a great sign of things to come in this ever evolving and exciting sport. Come down and support women in sport and this great event".

All matches are played at Traeger Park on Easter Friday, Saturday and then the finals on the Sunday.

Admission costs are $6 per person for adults and $2 for kids. This is a family event, so alcohol is strictly prohibited.
