Students that have selected the subject study all areas of football including physical  testing, diets and nutrition, game plan studies and coaching.
The Football Focus studies give the students opportunities to travel and play teams from various schools across Australia.
Currently, year nine students are under the watchful eye of teacher Stuart Shaw developing coaching skills in conjunction with  AFLNT completing their ‘Level 0’ Coaching Accreditation.
“It is the first step to getting these children to play active parts in football clubs and we hope to continue to develop their coaching accreditation onto Level 1 and beyond,” said AFLNT Schools and Participation Manager Wayne Walsh.
Once their ‘Football Focus’ studies are completed successfully, students are afforded the opportunity to travel to the Tiwi Islands visiting schools and running coaching courses.
“It a great way for students to grow in confidence and self development,  while helping promote AFL football on Tiwi Islands,” said Shaw.
“AFLNT are extremely proud of what  St Johns are achieving with their students and what they are continuing to achieve in the broader community,” said Walsh.
Other aspects of the study include Basic Umpiring Courses as well as NAB AFL Auskick induction which the students put into action helping out with various NAB AFL Auskick Centres and Thunder AFL Juniors across Darwin and Palmerston.
“The students involvement in grass roots participation programs is fantastic and is well received by parents and other volunteers and NAB AFL Auskick Centres,” said Walsh.
