Defence Jobs AFL Carnival & TIO NTFL Season Launch

AFL NT launched the Defence Jobs AFL Carnival and the 2009/10 TIO NTFL Season today on the lawns of the Museum & Gallery of the Northern Territory.

AFLNT will launch the 2009/10 TIO NTFL Season and the Defence Jobs AFL Carnival today on the lawns of the Museum.

Northern Territory football is poised to uncover the next generation of local talent this season. With the completion of NT Thunder’s inaugural season in the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL), the 2009/10 TIO NTFL Season is set to be unique thanks to a new breed of players emerging through the ranks.

"Following the success of the first season of the NT Thunder, this year’s TIO NTFL Season will unearth new talent, and see the next crop of Thunder players vying for a spot on the list," said AFL NT Chief Executive Tony Frawley.

"It will also see the Tiwi Bombers playing four home games on Bathurst Island, six triple headers and the return of the night Grand Final which was a huge success in 2008/09."

The TIO NTFL Round 1 season kicks off this Friday night at 7.30pm with the runners up from last season, Wanderers taking on the youth of the Darwin Buffaloes.

Saturday October 3 sees the Tiwi Bombers play the first of four home games on Bathurst Island against traditional rivals and reigning premiers St Marys kicking off at 1.30pm.

The action continues at TIO Stadium 6.00pm Saturday night when Nightcliff and Palmerston go head to head.

This feast of TIO NTFL football will finish at TIO Stadium on Sunday October 4 with Southern Districts v Waratah at 4.00pm.

After four consecutive years as principle sponsor of the NTFL Season TIO has adopted a new direction on community sponsorship programs to focus on issues such as Road Safety education and awareness.

TIO’s Community Engagement Coordinator, Sally Walker said "The NTFL competition is TIO’s largest on-going community sponsorship so for the 2009/10 season TIO is partnering with AFLNT to deliver a road safety program to young players and the wider football community. This includes a series of road safety sessions for junior players and the highly successful Party Safe anti-drink driving initiative."

TIO Stadium will also host the 2009 Defence Jobs AFL Carnival this weekend. The carnival provides spectators with a weekend long football feast with over 20 teams competing in two Divisions (Navy NTFL, Norforce Community). Teams have been nominated from all parts of the Territory ranging from Central Australia, Arnhem Land, Wadeye, Katherine and Roper Regions.

The Norforce Community division has had so much interest that it will field two pools which will play a round robin format over the weekend and the two pools will cross over in semi-final playoffs for the Grand Final of the Defence Jobs AFL Carnival on Sunday 4th October at 2.30pm.

Defence Force displays will be on show all weekend along with a variety of interactive demonstrations suitable for people of all ages.
