The Country Clash is back in the Red Centre – AFLX style

Country Clash

Good Friday will see a return of the Country Clash in Alice Springs as the popular round robin competition is back for its second year.

The 2019 version will see some exciting changes with the competition being played according to AFLX rules and it will also be the first time that a women’s division will be held.

Last year the Country Clash saw nine men’s teams entered and this year the number of men’s team’s nominations will be capped at 16 while women’s will be capped at eight. Due to high expressions of interest, only one men’s and one women’s team nomination will be accepted from each club and/or community unless capacity isn’t reached.

Games will be played using the AFLX format with nine field players (three defenders, three midfield, three forwards) and three interchange. A 10-point super goal is awarded for any goal kicked from within the launch zone located in the middle of the field and the ball is returned to the centre after a super goal. Other AFLX rules include a 10-second shot clock and play on rules apply for ‘last touch’ out of bounds and kicks backwards.

AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) is now calling for team nominations which close at COB on Friday 5 April along with a registration fee of $300 from each team for their nomination to be accepted. Payments may be made by cash, cheque and/or credit card in the AFL Northern Territory office at TIO Traeger Park, via Speed Street, Alice Springs.

AFLNT’s Community Football Manager – Central Australia, Darryl Griffiths, said it was a great opportunity for local teams to test their talent ahead of the official TIO CAFL season.

“The Country Clash will provide a fantastic opportunity for teams from right across the Central Australian region to come together to play the game that they are passionate about.

“The introduction of a women’s division and using the AFLX format makes this year unique and it will be fantastic for spectators as well as players so we encourage everyone to come along,” said Griffiths.
