Henry Peckham

Player

Centralian Henry Peckham, an Indigenous Rover from Alice Springs is considered to be one of Central Australia’s finest footballers.

A key member of the Pioneers Football Club Premiership teams of 1947, 1948, 1949,1951, 1953, 1956 & 1957, he was the CAFL’s leading goal kicker in 1948 & 1953 booting an almighty 74 goals for Pioneers.

He was awarded the CAFL Mail Medal in 1949 and was a member of the CAFL representative team that played against the NTFL in 1948; again in 1949 - a game that saw him judged Best on Ground; and a third time in 1952

Henry Peckham is thought to be the first Territorian to play League Football in any interstate football competition playing with SANFL side West Adelaide in 1950.

Having kicked 13 goals for West Adelaide Reserves, Henry made his debut against South Adelaide on 13th May 1950 as a second rover and went on to be named Best on Ground whilst displaying a keen eye for goal, kicking an impressive 5 majors .

The Adelaide Advertiser described the League Football debut of Henry Peckham, from Alice Springs as ‘an outstanding success’

Henry Peckham demonstrated exceptional endurance and always had plenty left in the tank after being in the thick of it all day. He was adept in the play-on style, creating the loose man intelligently in the forward lines. His natural ability to get the ball for himself and dispose of it to advantage stamped him as a fine footballer.

Henry played a further five (5) league matches before injury cut short his promising SANFL career.

Henry Peckham became one of only seven players from the inaugural CAFL competition to be selected in the 8HA AFL Central Australia Outback Team of Champions in 2005 and in that same year Henry was inducted into the AFL Central Australia Hall of Fame.

A gifted Rover with an abundance of skill and a tremendous commitment to the game he played with such admirable fervour, we are honoured to induct Henry Peckham into the AFLNT Hall of Fame.
