AFL 9's Women's Footy is here!

Last Friday night saw the commencement of AFL 9’s Women’s footy at the Traeger Park Baseball Oval.

Central Arrernte: 12.16 – 88 defeated Santa Teresa: 0.9- 9

Santa Teresa: 6.6 - 42 defeated West: 5.3 - 33

South FC: 10.6 - 66 defeated Federals: 4.4 - 28

Andy Hood, Regional Manager, AFL Central Australia said "We had the same competition last year, and were really pleased with the participation levels and success of it. We had six teams, so naturally it was a six week season which commenced in June. The grand final was played on the same day as the CAFL in September, which saw Pioneers FC make history and become the first women’s team to take out the premiership".

Mr Hood also commented "We envisage this year will be even better with eight registered teams and within that representation from a couple of community teams, Hermannsburg and Santa Teresa. Our long term goal is that each of the town clubs has their own women’s team and we eventually get representative footy to the level it needs to be, and I think we are on track to achieve this".

The competition will run over a ten-week period with the Grand Final to be played on Saturday 8 September, the same day as the CAFL Grand Final at Traeger Park. You can see each match on Friday night from 5:30pm onwards at the Traeger Park Baseball Oval, so come along and support women in sport.

AFL 9’s is the AFL's alternative version of the game. It has been developed so that all Australian football enthusiasts - and those new to the game - can play matches that parallel the traditional game.

AFL 9’s is easier to play, less physically demanding and provides an environment whereby participation, enjoyment and safety are a priority.

The game is played between two teams of nine with interchange players and has two twenty minute halves.
