AFL Northern Territory welcomes the announcement today from Hon. Jenny Macklin MP, Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs of an additional $1.5 million funding boost to expand AFLNT’s operations further into the Northern Territory through the "Strength and Unity Through Football" Project.
AFLNT will utilise this funding to expand operations into five new locations over the next two years and AFLNT CEO Tony Frawley is delighted with Today’s announcement.
The funding coincided with 22 other funding announcements to come from the Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA) that was established by the Commonwealth Government in 1976.
"The funding will allow us to place an additional five full time Remote Development Managers into regional and remote Northern Territory communities," said Frawley.
"The new projects will complement our existing FaHCSIA funded projects in Wadeye, Galiwin’ku, and Groote Eylandt,"
"The programs are designed to improve football infrastructure in each community. Full time AFLNT Development Managers will strengthen junior and senior leagues, start up new women’s leagues and talent pathways, deliver remote NAB AFL Auskick programs as well as overseeing the delivery of AFLNT’s unique football themed school attendance program. Football will also be used as a mode of delivery for an array of key healthy lifestyle messages into each of the new communities.
"The funding will further enhance our aim to have 16 remote locations covered in the Northern Territory, with this funding it takes our total to nine with our aggressive expansion plans to cover the entire NT by 2020."
