AFLNT Statement - Darwin Buffaloes Football Club

Article_DBFCSTATEMENT

In relation to an incident which occurred during an NTFL Men’s Premier League match between Darwin Buffaloes and Waratah in December 2022, AFLNT can confirm that conciliation has taken place and the matter has been addressed.

In addition to an apology from Darwin Buffaloes Football Club, AFL Northern Territory strongly condemns all types of vilification in the football community including when directed towards or coming from our players, fans, staff, and their families, across all levels of our game.

While rivalry and competition remain integral in our code, there is no place for vilification or discrimination of any kind in our sport, or in the community.

Players, staff, and supporters from all clubs across the Northern Territory are on notice, and umpires, match and league officials have been briefed to take-action if they witness it.

Everyone in our game has the right to feel safe and supported and we encourage everyone in our game to report vilification whether it relates to race, religion, colour, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

We ask everyone to call out this behaviour when it is safe for you to do so. Reports can be lodged to AFL NT Competition Manager, Gavin May ([email protected]), or via the AFL’s Integrity Issue online complaint form at https://eafl.austfoot.com.au/afl-makeareport/en/#/home.

Darwin Buffaloes Football Club Statement:

“The Darwin Buffaloes Football Club acknowledges that Waratah's player Corey Rich was vilified by one of our players during our Men’s Premier League match on 3 December 2022. We extend our sincere apologies to Corey. This conduct is unacceptable and does not align with the values of our club or the broader community. We do not tolerate any form of vilification under any circumstances.

Our player, Bradley Stokes, takes full responsibility for his actions and issues the following statement: "I am sorry to Corey Rich for insulting him and causing offence in any way. I acknowledge the words I used are not appropriate on the footy field or anywhere else. As a leader within the Buffaloes, I will help make sure that this behaviour will not happen again from myself or anyone within our club."

We acknowledge the openness and honesty with which Bradley has taken responsibility for his actions and learnt from this incident.

We are committed to promoting inclusivity and respect within our sport and will continue to work towards creating a safe and welcoming environment for all. We will review and reinforce our club policy against vilification and provide our players with additional education on the impact of their words and actions.
