Warren 'Jacko' McCoy

Player

The Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) provides a platform for Top End footballers to showcase their exceptional skills and abilities, with true champions emerging from the competition, champions such as Warren ‘Jacko’ McCoy.

An outstanding defender, Warren’s NTFL career was played with North Darwin (now Palmerston Magpies), spanning from 1973 until his final season in 1995/96.

Warren was a quiet, unassuming player and played in a number of positions for North Darwin including Back Pocket, Halfback-Flank, Wing and Half-Forward Flank. Playing 232 league games for North Darwin, Warren won the Club’s Best and Fairest award four times; 1981/82, 1984/85, 1985/86 and 1989/90. In 1985/86, he missed out on winning the Nichols Medal by a single vote.

After playing in a grand final with North Darwin in 1979/80, the following year Warren was on the ground for the Club’s inaugural Premiership win. He displayed tremendous leadership qualities, captaining the North Darwin side for four years.

Warren will long be remembered for his outstanding performances in NTFL representative matches, awarded the Australia Day Medal in 1985 for his dominant Best on Ground performance against Glenelg.

Warren went on to represent the NTFL a further five times against Essendon in 1986, 1989 and 1990; Port Adelaide in 1989 and St Kilda in 1990.

Warren was named in a different position in the Northern Territory News Team of the Year in seasons 1978/79, 1980/81 and 1985/86. Warren was also named in the Back to Cyclone Tracy 1974/1994 NTFL Team of Two Decades and was the only Magpies player included in the Toyota Top 20.

Warren was awarded Life Membership to the North Darwin Football Club in 1986/87, further being awarded an NTFL Player Life Membership in 1990. Receiving Territory football’s greatest honour, we welcome North Darwin legend, Warren ‘Jacko’ McCoy, into the AFLNT Hall of Fame.
