Laz Connelly’s CAFL A-Grade umpiring debut

L&S

It only took three rounds of boundary umpiring for the NT’s very own dancing umpire, Laz Connelly to make his boundary debut in the A-Grade of the TIO Central Australian Football League (CAFL) Town competition.

Laz joined the umpiring ranks in 2021 as a goal umpire and rose to fame after showing off his dance moves at the opening of the Santa Teresa Oval with the Melbourne Football Club last June.

These moves landed him on the national stage including across national social media platforms and showed everyone how fun it can be to wave the flags as an umpire.

Laz has continued to enjoy his umpiring and has branched out to boundary umpiring for the 2022 CAFL season to improve his fitness and earn some extra money.

After working hard throughout his offseason to learn the craft of boundary umpiring, Laz was rewarded with an A-Grade debut between Rovers and Souths at Albrecht Oval last weekend during final days of the AFL National Community Umpiring Round.

His debut was made after already umpiring in a number of games across the weekend, waving the flags and backing it up with more games on Sunday to keep the crowd entertained.

Laz has been presented with plenty of opportunities to umpire across the Territory including in Darwin and throughout Central Australia thanks to the support of the AFLNT Umpiring and Remote Development teams.

It’s not only on the field where Laz produces his best work but also while working very closely with the team at Wellbeing Wednesday Footy 4 Life where he helps out by providing opportunities to have a kick of the footy with those who may not usually have the opportunity.

AFLNT Central Australia Remote Development Manager Sam Cunningham said it is fantastic to see the smile Laz brings to the faces of players and spectators when they see him step out to umpire each week.

“Laz has worked very hard and really deserves his debut on the boundary,” he said.

“It has been a very special opportunity to work closely with the Dancing Umpire and I know he will continue to entertain everyone, everywhere his umpiring career takes him.”
