2024 TIO CAFL Senior Men's and Women's Round Six Recap

CAFL Recap

The Rovers senior women's side have recorded their fourth consecutive win in a row following a victory over the resilient Alkamilya, whilst Wests kept Federal winless in round six of the 2024 TIO CAFL (Central Australian Football League) season.

Albrecht Oval set the scene for the first game of the weekend between Alkamilya and the Rovers. Rovers jumped out of the gates with two-goals, two behinds to just the two behinds for Alkamilya in the first quarter.

While things did not look great early on the scoreboard, the Panthers did provide themselves with opportunities regularly to score.

A three-goal to one second quarter had the nerves up for Alkamilya as signs pointed towards the Rovers building towards an unassailable lead. But the momentum turned in favour of Alkamilya as they held Rovers to just a point in the third quarter.

Rovers went on to kick two more goals in the final term solidifying a 30-point win, 47 to 17.

Rania Shelford found plenty of football for the Rovers, also finding time to get forward and record a goal, with Carly Wilson providing a valuable performance.

Rovers Captain, Delsey Campbell recorded two goals alongside Montanna Hudson.

Alkamilya co-captain Hayley Maher was credited with their best on the ground for her relentless attack.

Jim McConville Oval played host to the West and Federal, where despite Federal being the underdogs, they got off to a quick start.

Two goals straight for Federal gave them the lead heading into the first break as West could only manage a goal and two behinds for their work.

A further two goals from four scoring shots showed promising signs of a potential upset before five scoring shots from West allowed them to add three goals, taking a two-point lead at the halftime break.

Unfortunately for Federal, the first-half performance could not be replicated in the second, as they were held scoreless with West kicking a further three goals to record a 23-point win, their third of the season.

Wests vice-captain, Rachel Davine was accredited best on the ground, with Hannah Murdoch next best with four goals moving her position into fifth place on the leading goal-kicking tally with seven for the season.

In the men’s, Federal and South claimed victories in round six of the 2024 TIO CAFL season as gallant efforts from Wests and Pioneer fell short.

Federal have continued their good form as West were keen to bounce back and return to the winners list for what would have been their second win of the season.

Wests showed great physicality at each contest, however Federal continued to find a way through, creating overlapping run and repeat inside 50s.

Federal could not miss in front of the goal, kicking 16 goals in the first half.

In the second half, West’s effort around the contest began to pay off, kicking three goals straight in the third term, adding two more in the last.

However, it was Federal who ran away with the game in the end, with nine goals in the second half.

Kynan Barnes became a machine around the ball, finding plenty of contested possessions and a goal to reward his work.

Marcus McDonald was a nightmare for the West defense kicking seven goals with his partners in crime, Shane Inkamala and Eli Dayman both kicking five goals of their own.

Abraham Ankers also had a day out, with plenty of footy and three goals.

The McDonald and Inkamala show boosted them both to the top of the goal-kicking tally, with 14 each with McDonald only playing in two games in the season thus far.

Taine Stevens remained strong, making it tough for the Federal midfielders to win the ball, Jayden Dick was amongst those, who aided with Wests defense. Tunula (Travis) Smith kicked two goals, holding tied third spot in the goal kicking tally.

Souths and Pioneer engaged in an early shootout before Souths went up a level to claim second spot on the ladder.

An eight-goal first term between Pioneer and Souths had fans excited that a high-scoring thriller would be on display at Albrecht Oval.

However, in the second term, Souths would kick seven goals to just two for the Eagles with a commanding 43-point lead at the main break for Souths.

The first-quarter pulse from Pioneer could not be revived in the second half, as the Eagles added four more goals to their halftime total with Souths accelerating away with 10 additional goals to record a 77-point win.

TIO NTFL (Northern Territory Football League) Darwin Buffaloes Star, Daniel Stafford has again proven himself to be one of the best forwards in the competition with six goals, as Orlando Turner, Dominic Forbes, Robert Smith, and Troyston Corbett kicked three goals each for Souths.

Waylon Manson held his head high with a three-goal performance for Pioneer. Faron James with two goals and Liam McDonald worked hard all match, working up the ground to earn himself a goal.

All players will be vying for their spot in the upcoming CAFL representative match announced yesterday.
