Exponential Growth see’s TIO NTFL Discuss Expansion Plan for Youth Girls.
Rapid growth and clubs calling for greater division of the Youth Girls TIO NTFL competition has prompted AFLNT to seriously consider a 2015-16 expansion plan.
In just two short seasons since 2012-13 the division has grown from 3 teams playing nine-a-side to eight teams playing 15-a-side as per the playing rules set by the AFL.
Many teams have up to 24 players listed on team sheets each week, meaning clubs are at stretching point to accommodate the growing number of eager under 16 girls.
As the TIO NTFL heads into Women’s Round this weekend, AFLNT Competition Manager Darryl Griffith say’s the league is seriously considering their options for 2015 and beyond.
“Feedback from the clubs suggests we need to find ways to close the age gap in our girls and women’s competitions as well as provide greater opportunities for competition,” Griffiths said.
“Each of the eight teams continually field full side’s week in, week out and we can now see a genuine increases in numbers, depth and popularity.”
Tentative changes could include changing the Youth Girls competition from under 16 to under 15, and including an under 18 competition for the first time.
“This will provide a tighter age range in each competition, an additional underage pathway from Youth Girls to seniors, and increasing participation opportunities,” Griffiths said.
AFLNT will actively seek feedback from clubs, players and parents on the potential expansion later in the season.
