Qantas AFL Kickstart

Qantas AFL Kickstart is a Healthy Lifestyle Program which aims to use Australian Football to enhance the lifestyle of indigenous people living in remote areas!

The Core Components

1. Participation, via NAB AFL Auskick, AFL Juniors and Youth Football
2. Leadership, via NAB AFL Coaching, umpiring and administration
3. Life Skills, via links with health, education and police networks

Our aim is to establish sustainable NAB AFL Auskick centres and AFL Junior competitions in remote communities, focusing on participation, leadership and life skills for indigenous youth.

Who is Involved?

In a partnership with the Northern Territory Government, Department of Sport and Recreation, Health, Police and Education, Qantas AFL Kickstart links the community-based leaders and councils. The aim is to educate youth about important lifestyle issues, including nutrition, the dangers of alcohol and drugs, the value of education and road safety.

The key message is: Eat well, be safe, go to school.

Where is the Program Run?

Regional Development Managers from AFLNT service each Northern Territory region.

The regions are:
- West Arnhem
- East Arnhem
- Barkly
- Central Australia
- Katherine

How Does it Work?

Regional Development Managers visit indigenous communities all year round to conduct coaching and umpiring courses, facilitate meetings between key community stakeholders, provide quality resources and assist with the running of the program.

Why is it Run?

Qantas AFL Kickstart is not just about finding future AFL stars. The program endeavours to build a healthier community through healthy lifestyle sessions and regular participation in Australian Football - a sport indigenous people love. The development of future community leaders is crucial for the sustainability of community culture and customs. A strong focus on indigenous youth reinforces this. Finally, stronger relatinships between police, health and education and local government are created, ensuring the community is a safe and welcoming place for its members and visitors.
