Michael McLean LEGEND (1978-2010)

Known as 'Magic', Michael McLean’s style of football amply justified the nickname. Recognised as one of Nightcliff Football Club’s most celebrated players he won the U14 Gundeson Best & Fairest Medal in 1978/79, the U16 Hickman Best & Fairest medal in 1979/80, was a member of the 1981 All Australian schoolboys team and represented the NT at senior level 8 times. Discovered by VFL club Footscray, he played there from 1982 to 1990 before transferring to the Brisbane Bears where he starred from 1991 to 1997. He also vice-captained from 1993-97. Vice-Captain of NT/QLD representative team in 96 and was vice captain of Allies. Following the Bicentenial McLean was named All Australian in 1988. 

He played over 200 VFL/AFL games scoring 40 goals and was twice winner of Brisbane’s Best and Fairest in 1991 and 1993. He captained the Indigenous All Stars team in 1994 and 1999 & 2000 was the assistant coach for Brisbane Lions. He was named in the AFL Indigenous Team of the Century and in 2003, 2005 and 2007 coached the Indigenous All Stars and was one of only two Brisbane Bears players to be inducted into the inaugural Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame. Heading back to the NTFL he has coached both Nightcliff and Southern Districts and in 2009 was the inaugural coach of NT Thunder. A true NT Legend, we are proud to enshrine Michael ‘Magic’ McLean in the AFLNT Hall of Fame.
